Mr. McMahon joined Faulkner Banfield in 2011, following a 22-year career as a commissioned officer and Judge Advocate in the U.S. Coast Guard. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. McMahon was the senior legal advisor in the Coast Guard's largest and most unique region, providing advice on maritime operations, environmental protection and compliance, regulation of commercial shipping and licensed mariners, criminal investigations and enforcement, administrative law, military justice, and international law issues. He has experience as trial counsel and appellant government counsel in U.S. military courts and has practiced before the Coast Guard Board for the Correction of Military Records. Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. McMahon completed eight years of sea duty and served as captain of an icebreaker, conducting fisheries enforcement operations and facilitating maritime commerce in the Gulf of Maine and the Great Lakes. He is the recipient of several military awards, including multiple Meritorious Service Medals, Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and the Judge Advocate General's Spirit of Excellence Award.
Mr. McMahon is a member of the Alaska Bar Association, the Juneau Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the American Society of International Law. He has served as a faculty member in the International Law Department at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, lecturing on the law of the sea, the law of armed conflict, and international law at the Naval War College and in Australia, Chile, Ecuador, and Mexico.
